The issues surrounding translation are notorious, and they becoming all the more so when one enters the realm of foreign verse. The impossibility of a faithful decoding and rewriting led American poet Robert Lowell to take a radical approach. In 1962, he won the Bollinger Prize for Imitations, a book of loose translations of Montale, Rimbaud and other great poets. The title hints at his understanding of translation. What say out poet guests?
