Imagine that someone offered you something and said, "This might give you a short-term performance boost. If it does, we're not sure how long the effect will last but we know it will diminish over time. The boost might be just a year or two and it's all but certain that it won't last more than ... [Warning: Long post ahead] Yesterday I took the ACT college entrance exam for the first time. At age 44. It all started with Ira Socol's blog post, which argued that if politicians think that the standardized tests they are espousing are so important, they had better be able to pass those ... Read More

One of my favorite books on leadership is The Future of Management by Gary Hamel. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to do so. You can read my book review but the essential premise is that current management models, which are centered on control and efficiency, are extremely ill-suited for an ... Read More

How do you transform factory era school systems so that they better serve the needs of an information age society? You don't do it by being timid. Unlike most school reformers floating 'tweak-the-status-quo' proposals these days (let's test kids more! let's get rid of a few teachers! let's make ... Read More

Do students need to learn lower-level factual and procedural knowledge before they can do higher-order thinking?
There is a prevailing conception that students must learn facts and procedural knowledge BEFORE they can then engage in so-called 'higher-order' thinking skills. Educators, parents, policymakers, online commentators, and others point to Bloom's taxonomy (which typically has been portrayed as a ... Read More

As was so aptly said just a few days ago: It is hard to make an argument that there are many desirable post-secondary educational or career scenarios for current high school students that will not require the use of computer technology on a daily basis. The kids have known this for quite some ... Read More

Deron Durflinger, a high school principal in Van Meter, Iowa, says: We need a system that isn't based on doing well on NAEP and PISA, but in which students are able to actually develop a love for learning. Being able to adapt and learn more and newer skills is the world our students live in ... Read More

Here's a statement that I'm getting really tired of hearing: "We didn't have computers when I was in school and I turned out okay. There's no reason why kids today need 'em." I'm sure that this argument was offered in the past as well: "Buses? We walked to school barefoot, in the ... Read More

I love watching visions of the future from technology companies. Not only are they usually thinking ahead of most of us, they also are trying to actually create the future they envision. Here's a thought-provoking video from Microsoft about what our lives may be like in the years to come. Does this ... Read More
About Education Recoded
A blog written by the four directors of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE). We not only provoke a new vision of what education might be but also suggest specific changes and improvements to get us from here to there. We are engaged daily in this redesign of learning and will share the successes, failures, concepts, and creations that we find in our own practice and from others around the globe. The task of recoding our education system is both immensely daunting and exceptionally necessary. Connect with us: @mcleod, @jnash, @edjurist, and @jaysonr. Email: castle@uky.edu.
