  • For me, summer is a time to catch up on my reading. As I head out for a few weeks of vacation, I thought I would leave you with a few suggestions for things I thought were worth reading that you may have missed. Today, I want to share a few of the articles on contemporary wars that I found most ... Read More

  • A month ago I wrote an article expressing my concern over whether the U.S. has a clear, achievable plan in Libya. I knew at the time that President Obama would be reluctant to call what we were doing a war, both for political and legal reasons. But it never occurred to me there was any actual ... Read More

  • The U.S has begun an undeclared war in Libya. It has gone to war in spite of the privately-expressed concerns of its Secretary of Defense. And it’s not clear what exactly it hopes to achieve by its actions. President Obama has said that “Qaddafi needs to go.” But he has stopped short of saying ... Read More

  • “Any future defense secretary,” Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told an audience of West Point cadets Friday, “who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should have his head examined.” In what was something of a farewell speech ... • Bloggers, as most know, are exceptionally lazy people. Mostly, we sit around in our underwear playing flash games. America today is at crossroads. The threat of a major terrorist attack is very real, but it may be the least of our worries. We are on the verge of a global environmental crisis; our system of industrial agriculture may be unsustainable; the world’s fisheries are in danger of collapse. We are fighting two costly wars, neither of which seem likely to end soon. Health care costs are spiraling out of control. Our national debt is now the highest it has been as a percentage of GNP since World War II. And at the same time, we face important fights over abortion, same-sex marriage, and civil liberties.

How we handle these crises will determine the course the world takes in the coming years. Politeia serves as a guide to 21st-century politics as played for the highest possible stakes.
