Do you think compulsory economic studies would help the economy?

My theory is that if everyone were taught at school about basic economic principles, then we would all understand the role that consumer spending plays in inflation and interest rates. If we better understood our role, then we could all act on an individual basis to assist our governments in fiscal control.

I guess this is along the lines of the environmental protection movement; through education and awareness campaigns we all now how to recycle, reduce emissions, water and power usage.
