Should we rethink income tax?

In past decades, calls for income tax reform have been growing. The flat tax, fair tax, a national sales tax? The progressive tax system, such as the U.S. government collects today, once united economic theorists ranging from Adam Smith to Karl Marx. But times have changed, as have fortunes. Is there an argument for a new tax income regime, or even, no regime at all?
