Does the fear of death cause irrational belief?

Am I among the "chosen"? Am I among the "damned"? Should I choose to have faith in something I can never hope to completely understand? Does "god" have mercy on the undecided?
Why do we feel the need to be "special"? Why can't we just try the best we can with the life we have, and be glad we had it?
