then what created the big bang? believe me when i tell you that this one has kept me up for many nights. let's recap. the big bang theory states that in the beginning, there was an infinitely small speck of matter. that speck contained all the matter that was needed to create this universe, which we now live in. and in an instant the big bang occured and then all the elements were floating around just waiting to create life. i believe in the big bang theory. but i think the bigger picture is being missed. where did that speck of matter come from, and what caused it to create the universe. I happen to believe in chi, the energy force that gives us life. but whatever you believe in, there had to be an energy force behind the big bang. Many people believe that to believe in the big bang you have to exclude the theory of god. I dont think so. in fact i think you could make a pretty strong case the other way. i think that the universe had to have been created, if not by a god then by somethin. i believe this because the universe is so perfect, and was so perfectly designed that to think otherwise seems preposterous to me. there, now maybe i can get some sleep.

Re: if the big bang theory is true...
Proposing that something must have caused the big bang doesn't mean it's reasonable to prescribe any properties to that something, whether that's intelligence, knowledge, ability to effect the universe, all knowing, all powerful, or all good. The arguments for the universe being designed seem to me to be arguments from ignorance. However improbable it might seem that the universe is the way it is, it doesn't mean much given our lack of understanding. We don't know why the universe is the way it is. Saying something is designed only makes sense if we know of the designer, and in this case we do not know of a designer. Calling it "perfect" seems meaningless to me.

Re: if the big bang theory is true...
Excellent question fellow rambler. I've also wondered the same thing when I learned about the big bang theory. An infinite small speck of everything containing our universe can only seem to exist in some other universe and not our own universe because our universe is contained in the speck itself. But then where did that come from? The problem with cyclical Big-Bang/Big-collapse models is the fact that the expansion of the universe is accelerating and not showing any signs of slowing down to a collapse. However, to say that our Universe is created by some God is to accept ignorance. A paradox is created when you have a creator, wich is similar to the Big-Bang question you proposed. If there is a creator, who created the creator that created the creator. A creator complex enough to create the complex universe in which we live is many times more improbable than saying we are a product of a sensible evolution process starting with the raw elements of the universe.

Re: if the big bang theory is true...
Well, I've heard that the science community did not jump right on to the big bang band wagon(try saying that 3 times fast, seriously, do it) because the main proponent behind it's beginnings was a catholic priest and the science community felt like excepting the theory would almost imply they were basing their exceptance of it on their preconcieved notions on God. That sentence feels garbled, so I'll restate. They(the science community) was slow to except the big bang originally because of the theory's overt implications of there being a God. They only would except it as it became-due to mounting scientific evidence- more and more difficult to reject. So I think many have felt that the theory implys an original alchemist(God).

Re: if the big bang theory is true...
This one keeps me up at night as well. If the big bang theory is true I find it hard to believe that it just was. In my classical mind there has to be a catalyst. It's impossible for me to comprehend anything else, but this brings up even more problems. What begat what and where did it come from. If you believe that something can't come from nothing then what can you believe?
