: I have not had a near death experience but I am heartened by the reports/stories of people who have. Expanding our awareness of people's experiences with death has almost no downside that I can see. They disclose a part of human experience that we know little about and which is generally shrouded in fear. I appreciated particluarly the revelation that people tended not to talk about their experiences unless they felt someone would be positive toward their story. That points to a reservoir of undisclosed stories that are out in the world waiting to be revealed for our enrichment. This is good stuff and I am glad there are people who persue this subject with passion and vigor.

: Do you exist if I do not believe you exist-is the question. Of course one is not sure.An objective reality cannot exist without somebody perceiving it.If you believe it still exists independent of your perception,you may do so but that is only a belief and hence is subjective. It is therefore safe to presume that nothing exists without our perceiving that it exists. The question that arises is whether a reality has necessarily to exist if we believe it exists.By way of example ,I believe ghosts and gnomes exist and does that mean they exist as an objective reality ? No.Additional conditions apply .Verifiability of the evidence suggesting their existence should possibly be one of the conditions. Of course one would ask what we mean by verifiability.Suppose there is a mountain near the horizon and everybody's perception and everything else points to the possibility of its existing. Which means the sensory impressions of all the people with respect to the object tally in all respects. We may therefore conclude the mountain exists. The unanswered question is whether several assessments tallying with one other and based upon "physical verifiability" make the mountain an objective reality . Since we cannot separate our consciousness from what we perceive outside of ourselves the only way of verifying the existence of the objective reality is to cease to be the experiencer and become a part of the experienced. This is what the Hindus call brahma gyan(knowledge of Brahma)

U R right...but I'm betting on what I have been investing in the past several decades... I believe in the Bible...and what it says. check out John 3:16....Peace is what I have about heaven...My mom died this last year. I had a year of grief and deep thinking. But...I'm back to a peaceful resolution...Jesus was in the beginning and in the beginning was the word. I find peace, daily strength in reading the bible...and then journaling...almost like chatting with God...while I write...I have to say that the Lord has been loyal to me. In good and bad days...he sits with me, counsels me...and in the next life...eternity...it will be the same...me with Him forever. I'm absolutely certain of this. I refuse to believe that I will be worms in a box or ashes in the sea...my flesh yes...but my soul...no...It will be with God as it is now. I hope that this offers you some peace or thought to ponder as you rest.

Is suicide a noble thing or is it just plain stupid?

I think the answer is pretty simple: Fear. As you say, the Universe will exist as it always has after we are gone, but that doesn't really matter, because we aren't the entire Universe; we are only conscious in one part of it. We are afraid that, when we die, that's it; lights out, no more life, oblivion. As a species, we can't comprehend that. About the closest most people can come, I think, is to imagine that they will be floating alone, forever, in blackness, which isn't that comforting a thought. We can't imagine what it would be like to not have consciousness, because the only thing we have to imagine that with is consciousness; hardly an appropriate tool. And, since we can't understand this concept, we fear it. It's instinctual. What we don't know could kill us, so we've carried that fear over to after we are dead. So, instead of oblivion, we've come up with afterlives that we can imagine, and like.

This fear could very well keep us from making the right decisions, but it also helps us make good decisions, at least from the point of survival; if we have no fear of death, we aren't going to defend ourselves as well. The thought of a desirable afterlife also adds meaning to the life we have now; we have something to look forward to, to work toward, something to keep us going when life gets hard, instead of just giving up.

I really haven't a clue as to what happens after you die. I am a Christian, so I do believe in Heaven, but that is just belief; I don't know there is a Heaven, so I speculate on this a lot.

Assuming Heaven is real, would it look like we all picture - sitting around on clouds, wearing robes, and plucking at harps? Personally, for a place of eternal happiness, that doesn't sound too great to me. And it is that that has led me to my belief: Heaven is different for everyone.

It could be like Terry Pratchett idea that we get the afterlife we believe we will get (Hence why missionaries should be shot on sight; no one goes to Hell if they don't know about it), but what seems more likely is that, since everyone likes different things, we get to shape Heaven for ourselves, doing what we want to do, outside of any rules or punishments (presumably, if you got into Heaven, you wouldn't make it into a hotbed of sins). Who knows? Maybe we all get the chance to be God of our own Universe, if we so choose.
