It was originated as an American Protestant response to perceived slackening of religion. I think Sam Harris is indeed a secular fundamentalist, in that he responds to a very real slackening of atheism. Are you equating Sam with a religious fundamentalist? Then you might be implying that those of us who question and doubt the claims made by religious theist are all "fundamentalist". If you are, I dont believe you've examined the thinking of religious fundamentalist and how they almost have nothing in common with us skeptics,humanist,atheist,freethinkers, and secularist.
