There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems; one vast, interwoven, interacting, multivaried, multinational dominion of dollars. This in itself is a slow moving crisis that is causing inflation of everything from kids toys and lawn furniture to food production and shipping and manufacturing.

-The Middle East, the largest world center of oil production (and underdeveloped oil resources in Iraq and Iran) has become MORE UNSTABLE because of neo-conservative intervention.

-Climate Change means more and larger storms. American oil facilities are clustered together within major hurricane targets. All our eggs are in one basket.

-The American Dream was built upon the foundations of Cheap Energy and Excessive Consumption. Our Economy is dependent upon that policy continuing, yet record oil prices; and conservative refusal to accept Climate Change as a real threat which resulted in America being unprepared; and completely failing in our Middle East policy all add up to the surety that America will be severely crippled by any and all very possible future events.

America is all but on her knees and it seems then inevitable that we will experience a decade of Depression when fate strikes the blow. Therefore we need to instigate severe change in our consumption habits immediately, and while this will depress our economy, at least we will be managing that change rather than waiting for Fate to send us reeling.

To start, we must admit that the American Dream is dead. She died from obesity. Then we must create a new dream, not a neocon dream of empire, not a Corporatist dream where the rich and powerful dominate government, not a far-leftist dream where the State of Israel comes to an end, but a dream of NEW ENERGY.

We need to dream not of consumption, but of conservation and RECYCLING. We need to dream not of oil, but of electricity.........................oh-oh, where does that come from? Our electrical infrastructure is ill equipped to handle our current needs; how will it deal with a rush of plug-in electric automobiles? Without vomiting more carbon.

So you see, even the solutions to this problem are another Progress Trap (Ronald Wright); we are doomed, unless we start immediately and mange our Doom rather than waiting for Fate

Bigthink Wed, 02 Apr 2008 20:11:24 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/features/365/#13203
