On the macro scale, it regularly ignores powerful institutions like the UN and the WTO, despite the fact that it is among those organizations' leaders. Most of the world is still developing economically in one way or another, and political change and development is in a similar state. The US can absent itself from this system, but doing so won't help us and will probably cause nearly irreparable economic and diplomatic harm. But we also can't continue to act irresponsibly and unilaterally, and try to force the world into our mold. We should act as a sustainable leader, an example of kindness and honor in the international system, giving help when asked for and supporting initiatives that will advance the state of all humanity. If the US adopts this position, it could very possibly change the face of the international order, but we certainly aren't in a position to do so yet. "Axis of evil" is in the eye of the beholder. Bigthink Thu, 17 Jan 2008 19:21:51 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/policy-politics/foreign-policy/1006/#2161
