If they can avoid making the mistakes that first world nations have, all the better. I don't, however, believe that we should ask developing nations to do anything we are not resolved to do ourselves. We must live by example to make the case. We cannot make a green conscience a mandate, or a string attached to aid money. It needs to be the right thing to do given the alternatives.
