I think that the government, nay, the public needs to CONTINUE to look at education just like Canada looks at Healthcare. its a public good that should be evenly distributed. If you're a rich Canadian, you can still get better healthcare than others. But education needs to be evenly distributed. But I think your idea about simply 'paying teachers' more is wrong. Look, the government can't get everything right. Privatize schools and let parents and children have a choice of where to go to school. Believe me, salaries for teachers will go up, way up, at schools that are run well and children succeed. Swedish Chef says it all. I've been surprised that education has not been raised as a policy issue by either of the democratic candidates. As the economy tanks and US legislators begin to think about how we will re-vitalize the US economy, we are talking about re-negotiating NAFTA and Healthcare and the Environment. All legitimate policy issues. But do you know how we can really fix these issues? Smart people and innovation. Education is where that starts. Raise teachers salaries. Get smart people engaged in the Education system and let it run. Bigthink Fri, 02 May 2008 15:24:59 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/policy-politics/education/10198/#16310
