Anna, an English teacher of mine once transformed my initial disinterest in Shakespeare by challenging me to come up with a companion line to the bard%u2019s famous Brevity is the soul of wit. I was to leave the classroom and not come back until I%u2019d had one that was as good as the original. William and I spent the next half hour together going over his line. Was the line I came up with as good as his? Will would surely know, but in the process of turning his thought over and over in my mind, I came to love him dearly.

Brevity is the soul of wit.
Levity is the heart of it.
