"Greatest" is a tough term. I think there are two divisions here: 1) bands that are historically significant for changing music and 2) bands that are just amazing to listen to and who's music age well. I'm sticking with #2 for this list:

1. The Beatles (duh)
2. Radiohead
3. U2
4. REM
5. Sonic Youth
6. Jimi Hendrix
7. The Police
8. The Clash
9. The Cure
10. The Who

rock and roll is actually very specific to the 40s and 50s with bands such as franki valli, from this stemmed rock and pop and even punk which are completely different. for actual rock and roll groups the i'll name my top 3.

franki valli and the four seasons
chuck berry
elvis presley

as for other branches included such as rock and pop which are often associated, i would go for

queen
billy joel
the beatles
the rolling stones
the who
elton john
david bowie

and bonnie tyler

Emphasis on BANDS.....Beatles, Stones, Springsteen's E Street guys, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The BAND, Los Lobos, The Neville Brothers, U2, Sly and the Family Stone, and Talking Heads

I think it was Frank Sinatra who remarked that "Rock 'n' Roll is for squares." That's true. If as many people like a band now as liked Lawrence Welk then, well I'm afraid it's for squares.

You cannot pick from the top ten rock bands. Rock and Roll is a umbrella genre that covers a ton of other genres. You have to be more specific.

If by "greatest" you mean the bands that influenced the popular music of their era, and whose styles influenced other bands that came along after them, I would have to put the Beatles at the top of the list, but not without acknowledging that their early songwriting was heavily influenced by earlier artists, particularly Buddy Holly. Likewise, the Rolling Stones have influenced countless rock-and-rollers, but they, themselves, were influenced by Chuck Berry and many American blues artists. There is a lot of musical cannibalism going on, and that has always been the case.

So, you have Chuck, Buddy, the Beatles, the Stones. Also on the list of influentials would be U2. They're not a particular favorite of mine, but there are still new bands coming out to this day that have obviously been influenced by their style. Lynyrd Skynyrd influenced many a Southern Rock band, and made the style popular nationwide, if not internationally. Nirvana ushered in a new era of both musical approach and soul-baring lyrical content that still echoes today, and was itself influenced by the the aggressiveness and honest anger of punk rock, which is a style best exemplified by the Clash. Elvis Costello has also influenced scores of other artists.
AC/DC cannot be denied a place in the pantheon of major influences, nor can Led Zeppelin. Uh, oh. By my count, that makes eleven. And there are others that I'm sure deserve to be considered, but you asked for ten, so I'll stop here.
No doubt some of you will disagree with my list, so why not make a case for your own list of influential bands?

Although "greatest" is a matter of opinion, but based on musical quality it's:

The Beatles, Radiohead, Coldplay, Incubus, Daft Punk, Interpol, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against the Machine, The Arcade Fire, and The Police. Not in any particular order.
