For instance if a Rage Against the Machine song was played during a Cadillac commercial. So what if they make a killing on a toilet paper ad? If a band volounteers rights to their song for an add for a charities add or something morale like that then no but I don't want to hear my favourite band tryin to sell me pizza pops. Otherwise If an artist sells a song for a commercial or whatever I don't think it's fair to label that as selling out. It might just be simply a business decision. I say this as an independent artist who works in an Office Monday to Friday, in a job I don't want to be doing, but do it because of bills to pay and to support myself as a songwriter/musician. If someone wants to buy 1 of my songs and flog it to death commercially and that is going to be what gets me to become a full time artist then give me a pen. I used to be a purist about this when I was younger but I feel like I'm a sell out working in an office Mon-Friday - and I wouldn't if 1 of my songs was on tv allowing me to be working full time on the Real Deal.
