I personally believe in philanthropy without a tax break and random acts of kindness. That is my nature. To each his/her own.

I must say that I really can't agree - it is the duty of the poor to realise their potential and to make every effort to strive for something better.

Otherwise you'll end up with a Welfare State, courtesy of too many philanthropists.

The rich only have an obligation to the poor if you believe that all humans are equally valuable and should be treated so. That's when you can claim that developed countries have a responsibility to assisting lesser developed countries or better aiding their domestic poor. There are people (despite what many will say) that will never escape a viscous poverty cycle without someone lending a hand. Yes, the rich have an obligation to the poor.

Well, if you believe Jesus, it's the rich who are in big trouble; not the poor.

Of course they are, just as the strong should assist the weak and the wise enlighten the ignorant. Imagine a large hallway that consisted of one billion tiles with a dollar on each one and its your job to keep it that way Then the all money gets swept to one end .You have no choice but to take from the tiles that have more than one dollar.

Not as such. Their only actual obligation to the poor is to pay their higher tax rate. Of course, they seldom do.
