Wishful thinking never seems to stop!
SETI isn't a government agency and isn't bound by any any governmental regulations to keep mumm if they discovered any evidence of Extraterrestrial Intelligence. They'd be shouting it from the roof tops, believe me, to get more funding! And I sure hope the government keeps on denying all the bogus claims of UFO's that the hysterical sector of the public keeps cooking up. Hey let's concentrate on the important things like taking care of planet earth instead of worrying about the little green men from the big beyond

Religion may also play a key role here. We know that the US, for example, has been founded on the "Judeo-Christian" belief system, but the question is 'Do they really know the "Judeo" side of their belief?

In the song of Deborah, we find the verse Judges 5:23), "Cursed is Meroz ... cursed are its inhabitants." in the Talmud (Moed Katan 16a) we find an opinion, that Meroz is the name of a star. According to this opinion, the fact that Scripture states, "Cursed is Meroz ... cursed are its inhabitants" is clear proof from the words of our Sages for extraterrestrial life.

Who knows....
BTW, in "Or HaShem 4:2", Rabbi Chasdai Crescas is one of the first to discuss the question of extraterrestrial life in general. After a lengthy discussion, he comes to the conclusion that there is nothing in Jewish theology to preclude the existence of life on other worlds.

The government (not just american, but global) appears to use an ``ignorance is bliss`` philosophy in order to retain control of the population. So unless irrefutable evidence arrives of extraterrestrial life, the government will continue to deny any and all existence of the little green men from Uranus.
