I think it only transmits is emotion. Think about it, both Death Metal and Christian Rock artists often write about Christianity. Personally, I think that Rage Against the Machine has proven themseles to be some of the greatest activists of the new generation. No other group has raised political awareness in youth since the days of the hippies. This is very important because it can often be difficult to get young people to watch the news or - God forbid - read a book.
