The question is too broad if we cannot define exactly what you mean by "rock".

Everyone has a different definition.

Tough question, but one of my favorites is Geddy Lee of Rush, Rush's newest album(Snakes and Arrows) has some pretty damn bass fine playing. Another one of my favorites was John Entwhisle,of The Who, I really like the short bass solos during the chorus of "My Generation".

John Entwhistle INVNETED rock bass playing. It all started with him putting piano strings on the bass. Changed the sound forever, no more thud, thud, thud.
