It used to be that high school was for training people to follow directions and colleges were used to teach people to think for themselves and to think critically. What is happening now is that the teachers in the universities are afraid of bringing up the more controversial subjects because if they say something that a person disagrees with they may lose their job. If you cannot talk about these subjects openly and honestly, for better or worse, then you will never get anywhere. Therefore we have lost the open forum of the colleges and universities.
