"Art", is the fore runner for the word artIST. Therefore "art" is but an extension of it's creator. If it is a beautiful depiction of the Hudson river, so to is the artist. If it's crap... so is the artist.

Interesting... I didn't pose this question looking for personal advise, but rather personal opinions. I was just curious to see where others "draw the line".
To PatrickA I must say - why the harsh judgement? - I'm no longer in school and haven't been in quite some time. I was just relating a story to illustrate my point. I am a well read individual and have formed my own opinion on the subject. This question wasn't about me. It was about you.

here's a concept why don't you students read Kant or Hume on the meaning of art? Get some reference points from world reknown philosophers. Art starts with intent but intent must be presupposed on substance. I've been an artist for over 40 years and have been teaching art for 20 get a reference point when you start a journey.

Art has to have some kind of meaning that comes from the artist. This is obviously not always apparent by looking at the art itself. The only people who can really decide whether something is art or crap are the artists themselves, if they're willing to be honest with themselves. While most people have their own "crap-meter", as 43cardinals said, you would be surprised at the huge discrepancies among people regarding this subject. There is clearly no truly objective way to judge a piece of artwork (or crap).

Most everyone has their own "crap-meter" inside of them and we know it when we see it. Artists and those who know/live art can actually articulate why its crap. For the small minority who believe that a piece of crap is art let them take it home, hang it and look upon every morning.

Art reflects life...have you been to Wal-Mart lately. Have you read the "ideas" on the Love & Happiness chapter...we are dealing with the lowest common denominator. Make the art you love the best way you know how...dont worry about the crap.
