It's crazy to read about the extents they have gone to to discredit their detractors. Check out "operation freak out" on google or wikipedia. It's really entertaining.
These people are nuts. I don't understand how anyone could be into their load of crap. Look up some of their beliefs and whatnot. It's literally fiction. Scientology is a lot like those infomercials that tell you what the product can do, but you can't find out how the product does it until you buy into it.

They tend to save their craziest beliefs for those that have put the time, effort and money in. There are 65 books and thousands of courses that all cost money. After you have spent your time and money, and the further up their "Thetan" levels you get, the more of the actual faith they will let you in on. For example, the story of Xenu - generally denied by the church - is not revealed until you are a higher Thetan level. Supposedly the lessons that are taught in the later levels are not suitable for lower Thetan levels as they are not enlightened enough. It takes a simple search of "Xenu" on Wikipedia to find out the crazier beliefs of Scientology.

As a budding psychologist though, I can say that the vast majority of Scientology's ideas about the mind are full of crap. I consider it to be somewhat of a psycology religion. They believe in an immortal soul-like entity that has had past lives. They believe people to be mostly good, but are turned bad by their decisions in life. This is what I don't understand though, they believe psychiatry to be an evil practice. I'm pretty sure its just because it could take away some of their business though. lol...So its like a collection of different religions that costs way more than a trip to the psychiatrist office. In my oppinion if was truely a church that believed in helping people then it wouldn't charge people that need them. Real religions are nonprofit, because all they want to do is help. The Church of Scientology was founded by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, who was an "eclectic" individual to say the least. The belief system is based on Hubbard's book "Dianetics," and the later "revelations" of Hubbard. Basically, they think that human suffering is caused by something called "thetans," I'd probably better not say more, they're a touchy lot. Speaking of which, did you know the Will Smith (Fresh Prince, MIB) converted to scientology Bigthink Sat, 19 Jan 2008 02:11:00 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/faith-beliefs/5337/#3476 Comment on: What do you know about and think of scientology? http://www.bigthink.com/faith-beliefs/5337 I think they charge for that kind of information...
