I was not intending to confine academia to certification, only to divorce certification of knowledge from its acquisition. These changes allow for a much more diverse and open educational system that can still fill the certification needs of industry. It also provides a much more just system since individuals do not have to pay for an education at the best universities to be certified by them. Online resources like the Open Courseware Consortium (http://www.ocwconsortium.org/) and Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page) should open educational opportunities to those that cannot afford or attend traditional universities. The lower cost of education, provided by online resources, combined with competitive certification organizations, can lead to the most level playing field, yet seen, for those with limited means. This opening of the education system and lower cost of certification also serves the needs of industry since individuals can rapidly learn new skills and adjust to market needs.
Bigthink Tue, 29 Jan 2008 04:24:54 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/policy-politics/education/5481/#6769 Comment on: Re: What needs to change in academia? http://www.bigthink.com/policy-politics/education/5481 With all the changes in life-long, life-wide and coninual learning, there are more roles for academia, away from certification. The increasing use of opencourseware reflects the community need for knowledge. Knowledge is available freely, especially on the Internet. Academics are able to contain learning to important and concise frames. Academics research, advance knowledge and are our greatest think tanks.A tertiary institution that fully integrates with the community is the way to go
Joyce Arnold Bigthink Sun, 27 Jan 2008 14:01:58 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/policy-politics/education/5481/#6465
