Ethanol is not even a fix. It is a way to create jobs, granted. A gallon of fuel from corn takes something like four times more energy to produce than a gallon of conventional gasoline. Politically popular,
but a potential boondoggle, slowing down real progress in the right direction. It keeps combustion enegines on the road, and so keeps polluting our environment. Dependence on oil is one reason it seems attractive. But ethanol is definately NOT the answer. Don't be fooled, however. Hydrogen fuel cells are a much worse solution as there is NO infrastructure to deliver hydrogen to the masses. Hybrid gas-electric vehicles that can also be plugged in may be a better short term solution.
There are Hummers out there right now that have been customized to get close to 100 miles per gallon using bio-deisel/electric hybrid technolgies. So there is hope. Just don't look to Washington for any educated solutions. Californy is the place you want to be.....
