Australia is Australia, the southern hemisphere, the Commonwealth, the Western World, and the Asian Pacific.

In answer to Asteroix: very few countries of the commonwealth reside within Europe so no we are not Europe.

Most importantly we are our own identity, it may not always seem so because we are so often overlooked, however, though many would refer to Australia as being part of Asia, Largely because of business ties and location, Australia Is very different to Asia, It has a very different Culture.

For decades people have being trying to figure out where Australia fits in, mainly because in truth, we only fit in to ourselves. Australia is so similar and so different to everyone else that it is on it's own. If you were to colour all the countries in relation to eachother on a map, Australia would not be the same colour as asia, their culture and ideals are too different, not europe either, they are a whole different system of small countries, and definately not USA, studies have shown that the Australian poppulation is more hostile towards USA than almost every other nation in the Western World.
Australia is on its own with the exception of the dearly beloved New Zealand. though there are many hostile opinions of Australia held but New Zealanders due to Australia's size and Australia's ability to overshadow New Zealand in many situation (and steal it's celebrities), New Zealand is in much the same situation as Australia, therefore placing Australia exactly where it is, Australia.

Perhaps we should be in Europe, being part of the Commonwealth.

Australia is rarely taken seriously, unless it is in the context of a visit to the travel-agent.

U.S is an entity [and region] of its own, I would classify it to be within the region of North America along with Canada. [mind you, North America is also not mentioned in the world sub-headings to the left either!]
We down in the bum-end of the world are lost in the U.S-centric world view-
Oz is either ignored [rightly so sometimes!],lumped with Asia, sometimes classified as a Pacific country. Feel for NZ too!
What region would you classify Australia to be in? I would say Australia-Pacific [Oceana?]. The term Australasia can raise a few heckles with some.

Australia is in, well, umm, let's see, okay, I'm pretty sure it's in Australia, but I have a feeling you're not going to accept that as an answer? In order for me to get a better idea of what you mean, where's the United States?
