Highly unlikely eh? More effort is put into the pursuit of maximum profit than healing. Sad really.

That's what the textbook might say but then you assume:

1. There is an absolute competitor.

2. That a competitor would decide it worthwhile to allocate substantial funds that may or may not find for a cure, rather than to focus their resources on their own billion dollar disease industry.

3. And that the competitor would not be more interested in getting his own nose in the existing trough that the other company enjoys.

What does "hope" mean to you?

Rephrased your question might read: "Once the treatment of a
disease becomes a billion dollar business, does there remain sufficient incentive for the development of an actual cure?"

The answer is, of course, yes.
If I can develop a product that will remove my competitors billion dollar market out from under them, I have great incentive to do so.
