However, you should not think of electricity as a "fuel" so much as a medium which transmits energy. Like you said, we need a lot of electricity to generate hydrogen. Likewise, we are going to need a lot of electricity to charge our cars. If the energy is generated in clean ways then we will be much better off. Equally important is the time of day that people will charge their cars. We can meet the added demand with little change to our infrastructure if we charge at off-peak times.
