The most important war in history is the latest one i.e. Iraq. We've survived the past wars and know the the effects of the past wars, not this one. The long term effects of this one will be great, economically, internationally and morally. That is why, in my mind, this one is the most important war.

I don't think wars should be glorified, but I think it is very important that they be understood. We need to have some idea of their causes and consequences particularly if we should ever contemplate the use of war as a policy option.

Disputing which might be the most important war is not necessarily a waste of time. Ranking historical events for their relevance or influence on later events can be a revealing exercise.
