Zeke: you make no mention of the effect of traditional Islam in Africa in terms of the supression of Wwomen's rights. My understanding is that African Christian communities afford a more liberal treatment of women in community; and in traditional Animist communities women dominate the social and cultural foundation of the communities.
You are right on the"large investment" 'twill take to turn our attention (usa) to the health of Africa, but that investment must have a foreign relations quid pro quo: we should never be embarassed for the legitimate pursuit of our legitimate interests abroad, but the investment we must make to be truly supportive of African economic and political development is a suspension of our belief that "democracy" is the sole soution to domestic social ills in all developing countries. When you live in that environment it becomes normal and the Western ways is very threatening for the women not just the men, actually. Change is hard I suppose.
I belive those first three years of a child's life determine their behaviour and attitudes for the rest of their lives and what Africa needs is to be honest about the first few years of a child's life - is the mother happy, stable and feeling loved? Or are those romantice thoughts only suitbale for wealthy westerners?
Bigthink Wed, 14 May 2008 01:26:38 +0100 http://www.bigthink.com/the-world/africa/972/#17106
