I am inclined to agree with you, but for different reasons.

There probably are reasonable medical ground for banning the weed, but there are also reasonable medicial grounds for banning alcohol and cigarettes.

Illicit drugs should be treated as a medical problem rather than a criminal matter.

Drug distribution should be regulated and taxed like other accepted recreational substances.

The nice side affect would be depriving organized crime of a major revenue source.
