This may seem muddy if your thinking is muddy. To me it is crystal clear.

The goal is to utilize religious structures as institutions to promote social justice.

The idea here is that in order to truly bring about the revitalizing change that occurs though such social movements, one must contemplate in solitude and reflection, to receive a divine revelation and guidance.

Jim, you rock. I saw you on CNN for the Compassion Forum, it was awesome. Barack Obama is able to articulate this vision incredibly.

Go Obama.

Re: Re: What is your favorite poem? http://www.bigthink.com//9738 YOU SHALL ABOVE ALL THINGS BE GLAD AND YOUNG

By: ee cummings

you shall above all things be glad and young

For if you're young, whatever life you wear it will become you; and if you're gladwhatever's living will yourself become.

Girlboys may nothing more than boygirls need:

i can entirely her only love

whose any mystery makes every man's

flesh put space on;

and his mind take off time that you should ever think, may god forbid

and (in his mercy) your true lover spare:

for that way knowledge lies, the foetal grave

called progress, and negation's dead undoom.

I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing

than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance

Wouldn't it be nice? http://www.bigthink.com//8746 Wouldn't it be nice if the United States had a goal of 0% infant mortality?

Wouldn't cost nearly as much as a space program.

Re: Re: Do universities have a philanthropic obligation? http://www.bigthink.com//8342 I know that I greatly value my University experience, and I took away a desire to promote a love of learning and commitment to engage authentically with the community on a "philanthropic" level if you will.

I wonder if web based courses are going to instill the same sense of community responsibility?

This is not a criticism of MIT's web-course; I adore that idea. I am just asking a critical question.

Re: Technology and Human Rights http://www.bigthink.com//8093 What about Genetically Modified Food? I have read reports that tout GMO rice and corn, manufactured by Monsanto, as the way to feed the [third] world, even though we have no indication that it would be safe for the human system to ingest.

Environmental Health Perspectives (ehponline.org) has just published a study on the effects of pesticide exposure in children (Jan 2008). Researchers concluded that dietary intake from produce is the main source of organophosphorus pesticide toxin exposure for children. Results also indicate that a 5-day washout period with an organic-produce diet reduced toxin levels to none-detected or close to none.

Is this a human rights issue? These toxins impact the human nervous system negatively and contribute to various malfunctions and diseases.

As mentioned here, the corporate scheme values profits, and this system conflicts with a global ethic and ethical production of goods. But sooner than later, consumers will demand ethically-produced goods, particularly food.

It is obviously the current trend. Wal-Mart has recently announced that it now requires suppliers of its private label and other food products to have their factories certified against one of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards.

It is time for economic structures to give way to this new model of business.

Any other good meditation mantras out there?

Re: Re: What should be the big issues of the 2008 election? http://www.bigthink.com//6164 I think that Chopra is saying that rather than appealing to the lowest of human tendencies to achieve a divisive end, political leaders should instead appeal to the highest of human capabilities to achieve better civilization. This would constitute a win-win approach to building a better and more authentically human society.
