At the end of the interview, I asked John how he does such great stand-ups, the opening and closing remarks for his segments.  He says he's had a lot of practice -- and likes to think of his stand-ups as conversations.  He does it as good as anyone.

Claude Lelouch, A Giant of French Cinema, Makes Films "Like an Amateur Filmmaker http://www.bigthink.com/arts-culture/theater-film/8244 Claude Lelouch, the celebrated French film director, who is best known for his 1966 Academy Award-winning/crossover hit "A Man and a Woman," tells Beet.TV he makes films in much the same way "an amateur would" -- he writes, shoots and edits it all himself.

For legions of independent film makers, the personal vision and execution of "auteurs" is an inspiration.

In this segment, Lelouch shares his creative process.  He has little use for the Internet as a means of discovery, preferring to witness life first hand.  He travels widely by himself with a small tape recorder to tape his thoughts.

He was in New York on Friday to promote his new thriller Roman de Gare, which he shot digitally.  The buzz around the film, which opens in April, is very good.

The voice you hear asking questions is my colleague Regina Weinreich who conducted the interview with David shooting.

Regina is the author of GossipCentral, the hip, insider blog about the culture scene in New York.  She'll be contributing segments from time to time to the purple channel on film and television.  Thanks for making this happen, Regina!

Video Journalism Transformed, Veteran News Producer Tammy Haddad http://www.bigthink.com/media-the-press/6820 Tammy Haddad, the veteran TV news producer who left MSNBC in November, where she was executive producer of Hardball with Chris Matthews to start her own consulting gig, has hit the campaign trail with her "TamCam," a $700 Sanyo camcorder

She has been getting some great scoops including an exclusive interview with Senator Ted Kennedy immediately after his Obama endorsement.  Her roughly edited pieces are published on Newsweek.com, where she is consulting.

The small camera, that looks like watering gun, has a hard drive and internal mic.  It's unobtrusive and less intimidating than the ones her camera crews had in her broadcast days.  Approaching presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee for an interview the candidate wondered, "Is that a loaded gun, Tammy?"

The TamCam moniker is from Politico's Mike Allen, a fellow traveler on the primary trail.

Also using the Sanyo XACTI is Greta Van Susteren on her GretaWire.   Also,  we are  told by sources close to NBC News, that Brian Williams has a Sanyo for his blog -- although not sure if he's used it yet.

Another journalist/blogger, using a hand held video camera to get some great scoops is Kara Swisher from the Wall Street Journal.  Jeff Jarvis recently returned from Davos where he used a Nokia phone provided by Reuters to upload video.   This is happening!

To understand how small cameras are providing unique access and the sort of transparent immediacy that is part of the new world of Web video news, we sat down with Tammy a week ago at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.  Fortunately Beet's David Kavanaugh was in Vegas shooting a conference.  Tammy was in town for the Miss America Pageant.  Tammy's on the pageant's board.

As previously reported, Tammy will produce a six hour web cast on Super Tuesday from the Washington Post/Newsweek studios in D.C.

MIT Technology Review's Jason Pontin: "Google is like a Giant Parasite" http://www.bigthink.com/media-the-press/5914 "Google is like a gigantic parasite that hollows-out existing (media) businesses," says Jason Pontin, editor and chief and publisher of Technology Review and New York Times business columnist.

He says that Google and Yahoo! "create nothing" and says that's bad in the longterm for media businesses -- and for the portals themselves.
