Hi Mickcurry,
Thanks for the feedback. We don't like seeing those types of comments up on the site. The challenge for all of us on bigthink is to keep from resorting to cheap and easy attacks on each other. Language like this discourages the thoughtful and nuanced conversation that we are trying to promote. If you think that Larry Summers is the world's worst economist, we want to see a strong, supported arguement, not just a snark attack. There's plenty of other places on the internet for that, just not here. Thanks!

As for the sake of public debate. No post should fall into the category of censorship. If one thinks Larry Summers an utter DOUCHE BAG, then they should be allowed to post it.

That's right -- to report abuses, just click on the exclamation point (!) available on every idea page.

I don't know how new this is, but at the end of each comment there is an icon (on my monitor, it appears as a square gray box with a white exclamation mark) which allows readers to "Report this comment". I haven't actually used it, but I assume it is a way to send complaints about inappropriate content.

While I've nicely attempted to express to an individual that consistently calling people an idiot and/or their ideas as stupid is not what this site is supposed to be about, is there a way to report them?

I assume (we all know what it means to "assume" something) that we should practice self restraint and inhibit ourselves in the name of civility. Can an expert be wrong? Of course. No one has all the right answers. In fact many questions have no right answers. That's why, I think, Big Think is being presented to the world through this marvelous means of communication called the internet so that we can all ... think big. Whomever is in charge of this endeavor ... thanks bunches!

Big Think isn't keen on name calling or other ad hominem attacks. Calling someone an idiot, an ass or worse has its emotional pleasure, for sure, but little other value--it certainly doesn't add anything to smart discourse. If you're feeling the urge to stick it to one of Big Think's experts or another community member, stop and think for a minute. What is about them, or more specifically their views, gets you fired up? Precisely why are they wrong, and you're right. Once you have an idea, submit it and make the case why.
