What Ever Happened To Easter?
It used to be that the media, at least in predominately Christian countries, wrote about Easter. Not any more.
Today is the most important day on the Christian liturgical year, which celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. It makes Christians, well, Christians. So where are the stories?
I woke up in Canada, a country founded on Christian values, albeit dueling between Catholic by way of the French, and Protestant by way of the English. In both national papers today, I saw next to nothing about Easter—not an explanation of the holiday, not its origins, no Easter recipes, no snaps of people in Easter bonnets from times past, nothing.
Back in New York some hours later, I looked at the New York Times online, and again, saw nothing about Easter. Perhaps I missed an article, but certainly nothing jumped out at me. Then I decided to check newspapers in Christian based countries in different parts of the globe to see if there might be a story or two about Easter. After looking through several big name newspapers in England, I came up empty handed.
Surely an Irish paper must focus on Easter in some way? Nope. I don't have any real answers to why there is no significant coverage about this day any longer nor why it also seems to have faded in importance to many Christians. We do hear stories about Christmas around Christmastime. So, what's the deal, are Christians around the world identifying less with their faith? Send us your thoughts.
