"Nestle Shouldn't Be a Church"

He is responding to Big Think's recent video interviews with Nestle Chairman Peter Brabeck on the topic of business sustainability: 


I am genuinely surprised and disappointed by Brabeck's comments about short-termism, shareholder value and a supposed 'new paradigm' for business. I fear that he draws precisely the wrong lessons from the financial crisis the world has endured.


The chairman's comments about sustainability and shareholders are simply irresponsible. Who is nestle to tell investors what 'the social good' really is? This phrase is silly and foolish. What constitutes the social good in the EU is very different than its definition in China, India or Latin America or Africa - all major Nestle markets. Nestle's formulations for the foods it sells is different all over the world - reflecting local tastes and conditions. How on earth can Brabeck think there can be - or even should be - some sort of consensus around 'sustainability' and 'the social good?” Nestle shouldn't be a church and a CEO shouldn't seek to be a cardinal.
