Can new media help create a new public sphere?

Jurgen Habermas ascribed the rise of 'old' media -- print journalism -- as giving rise to a public sphere where citizens could engage in discourse on important ideas. While BigThink is clearly a step in that direction, does new media really have the power to generate a new public sphere? Or will it succumb to the same temptations and commercial interests as traditional media and thereby reduce all participation to its lowest common denominator?
