Personal Politics

In today's technology and media-driven world, it seems as though Americans hear and judge candidates, Presidential and non-Presidential, more about what their personal points, such as religion and race. First, why are these features relevant at all? Why should i care that Gov. Romney is mormon, especially when all the mormons i know have the most strict, positive moral values of anyone i know? Is there any way that these seemingly trivial factors can be erased from the political scene, why or why not? If you believe they can, how can we accomplish this?
