The idea of life after death is - among other things - a way for people to invite themselves to think of their own death freely in order to distract themselves from life. Without this idea, many people find a final death as too depressing to think about. Perhaps one could seize thinking about death and occupy him/herself with thoughts of what there is to be done during life, for the benefit of one's own life and others, present or future, as well. I fear that many people have worried far too little about their current life because of their assumption that a following life would be the final and most important one. These people might stall many would-be-significant actions only to find (or lack the ability to find) that their death is, in fact, final and what was important all along has now been lost. Death is death, try and live with it.

Re: Re: What do you think happens to you when you die?

The scriptures are reasonably precise about what happens to us when we die. As a member of the LDS faith, we believe that faith is a wonderful thing to have, but without works, faith is dead. in other words, we are judged on what we think and feel and DO in this life.

for me this is great motivation to perform as well as I can in any given situation, treat others as well as I am able in any given circumstance and think twice before chastising or arguing with someone.

This comes about because we are also told that in this life we are to prepare to meet god. There is no 2nd chance in many (not all) circumstances.

I think that it is my hope for an afterlife or a life beyond this that gives me comfort.  Those around me chorus their unwavering belief in God and a life beyond this one, but I have no such faith, just hope.  Hope that when this life is over I can look back and say, I didn't do too bad, I helped someone along the way, and I didn't waste too much time worrying about the things I cannot change.
