Despite the rampant sensationalism in today's popular media, this is clearly not the darkest age of journalism. There are many tabloid-esque news outlets, but among the muck there are also plenty of news orgs. that put out very high quality journalism. Indeed, the record number of journalists incarcerated and killed last year is a tragic but good indicator of aggressive muckraking!
And advances in technology have allowed all of us to become journalists, whereas in earlier times journalism orgs. stood alone in their ability to disemminate news. More journalism is available to people now than ever before, but, correspondingly, the ability to separate the quality material from the trash is ever more invaluable.
