Description: Branson doesn't want to waste his position.

Transcript: I decided, you know, I didn’t want to waste the position we found ourselves in. And with wealth comes enormous responsibility. And capitalism has enormous faults. I’m going to say it’s the only system that seems to work, but it also throws out this enormous wealth. Tennis players, you know, tennis players enormously wealthy. Thousands of tennis players very poor. And you know basketball players, footballers the same. Rife throughout society is this extreme, extreme wealth that’s created by capitalism. So if you’re one of those lucky people who, you know, who are in that position where you get that extreme wealth, you’ve just got to make sure that wealth goes back to society in some form or another. Whether it’s creating more jobs, or whether it’s tackling the problems of the world . . . that money must not languish in a bank account and be unproductive.

You can make a big difference. And you know for a relatively small amount of money, you can make a big difference to a lot of people’s lives. So over the years I think we have continued in that spirit, but we never really had the resources to really make a difference. And we never really, you know . . . I never really had the power to be able to say . . . pick up the phone to Clinton or Mandela, or whoever in the world, and get straight through and get things done. So now I’m in that position, and it would be very sad to waste that position and just to carry on trying to accumulate wealth and more and more wealth. And you know it’s important we have the Virgin machine to generate the wealth; but then it’s very important not, not . . . It’s also very important for the staff who work for Virgin to know that wealth is going to be spent in a constructive way, and that’s what we plan to do.

Re: Re: Why do you give back?

I think this comes to all people at some time. However, the opportunity cannot always be realised. Even a little give back practised as many times as someone can has a positive snowball effect. Re inforcing the ideal in large or small actions is a positive human attribute that I believe ALL mankind can and should practice at some time in their lives. I do it for my community as a volunteer fire fighter and I believe I should do it more at other levels.

Last year i started reversing my key life anniversary dates. Instead of recieving on those days I now give to those I think need help. I should have done this a long time ago. Thanks to Richard and the many others who have demonstrated that it also something they see as a responsibilty also.

Re: Re: Why do you give back?

For way too long, too many people have made too much wealth... from raping the planet of resources to breaking the backs of the poor and disadvantaged.

What I don't understand about those who have more than (in some shape or form) 10 million dollars (American)...is that they want more!!  It is challenge to watch when they (the rich) do "give back", the media goes into a tizzy and flutters about then drools and attempts to get "the rest of us" all excited about it!!  Are wealthy people really doing enough to change the world with their "pet projects"?  It is not about time that the rich are to be asked to make a better future for the WORLD??

To make more of the world - a better place; I would suggest that the rich would have to pay "taxes" on these incredible riches.  New world-wide organizations (that work differently than presently) would be required to distribute this wealth) rather than trusting countries governments to dole these (new) monies... but it could be done!

It is my belief, that if these "new-taxes" were to be gathered and used correctly - way more people that live in miserable parts of the planet would not have such a difficult time living a life now or in the (predicted difficult) future.

Re: Re: Why do you give back?
I wish I could let go more easily, but I have a lot of fear around around a lack of material wealth. Comparing myself to my friends, I don’t feel like I have excess. On the other hand if I compare myself to someone living in a refugee camp in the Congo I feel like a glutton. I give when get past my fear and see how the flow of wealth has gathered too much junk at my door. I feel that giving is often the best way to unblock the stream of wealth so that I can make room for more good things to come into my life. I just have to trust, have that faith and take a chance.
