Are two parties enough?

America has traditionally had two main parties, with a few also-ran parties trailing in the dust. Political scientists tell us that parties are well suited to identify issues and positions to voters, but if there are only two parties, are we only getting two sides on every issue? Is our system nuanced and open enough to deal with today's complex reality?
