Yes it's broken.  We are getting what we pay for and what we ask for.

 We pay our president the same wage the manager of you local Walmart makes, so that's the level of talent the job attracts.  How can you justify the president making less than Major League Baseball's minimum?  If the job paid $20 million per year we could attract better talent.

When candidates speak honestly and from their convictions we vicerate them.  We don't like hearing bad news so we butcher the messenger.

Lasty, we don't have election choices.  We need a third option on the ballot that says "No Election":  If more than 50% of voters vote for No Election then each candidate is barred from that office for 4 years and a new election is held in 90 days.
