Is the border wall a solution for illegal inmigration into the US?

What "Wall" of this type, in human history, ever been a positive solution?

It's a sad example of history repeating itself; though not exactly, yet all too similarly.

We honestly know that a "fence" or "wall" are not a "best solution." Correcting and improving factors, causing disillusioned immigrants to come to the US, is the only beneficial course. Supporting and educating other governments to beneficial scenarios and practices for the good of their citizens, is a solution.

Though that would mean that the USofA practices the same and is not (too often) controlled by wishes of the corporations/lobbyists and the like.

I put this as a response to one of the comments - probably the wrong place.  Sorry about that.

I think the only ultimate solution to the US "immigration problem" is to work to remove the border, period.

The Europeans did it, although it took them 50 years. If Germany and France and Italy can drop their borders after hundreds of years of war and mistrust, we can surely do it with our neighbors to the South.

Europe had a bit more of a running start, as their economic differences were not that great. But they have continued the effort with the Eastern block, where the problems are major. This is not without problems, to be sure - but it is moving forward.

The people who come here, legally or illegally, do not come for our climate, or our scenery, or our language and culture. They come for the economic opportunity. They have energy and initiative, and are willing to take a risk, as much as my grandparents did when they left Germany in 1880. If their world gave them the basics required for that opportunity, they would show that same energy there.

To drop that border, we need to help Mexico invest in its own infrastructure, to provide the education, the stable infrastructure that fosters our economic entrepreneurship. Ultimately, it will be cheaper than any wall, and the economic benefits will be huge for both sides.

This is not an aid program, not a giveaway, this is an investment to create a mature trading partner of equal stature.

What would our world look like if any one of us, or any one in Mexico, could walk across the border, apply for work, earn benefits, attend school, pay taxes, etc.?

We might actually be on our way to becoming a full citizen of our own hemisphere - and eventually the world.

Let's call it a "reverse domino" theory - knocking down borders by spreading economic opportunity.

This will not be accomplished by some phony indoctrination in the "American Way". What is needed are the simple basic opportunities described by Amartya Sen in his book, Development as Freedom. If humans are given the freedom to do so, they will prosper. All they need is the opportunity.

The border wall between Mexico and the USA is a clear imitation of the Israeli wall in the West Bank. Look how well its working out for them. Anyone who thinks most of the immigrants get into this country by running across the border is a fool. It is simply a way for our government to throw our tax money at a completely worthless cause. Do we know how much this wall will eventually cost? I'm guessing there are a couple corporations with a lot of lobbyists in Washington making a killing off this deal. It is both bad for America and bad for Mexico.

I think a real solution would be to make Mexico a part of the United States. If they are no longer illegal immigrants, then there is no illegal immigration problem. Move big business south and they won't need to cross the border searching for work.

No, I think the wall is not the solution. If migrants have a choice to stay in their own countries, earn a decent living and be able to dream and hope within their borders, most would not risk a perilous journey, or choose to live away from their loved ones or miss birthdays and holidays with spouses and children or work in a culture, foreign from their own. They dream of green grass in the other side of the border perhaps because only the rich and the farmers have green grass where they are.... and what wall can bar the pursuit of such dreams?

Depends on the problem you want to solve. If you're only interested in stopping entrants, a massive wall works pretty well. I've visited, and it's formidably tall and quite solid. If the problem is inequality between Mexican and US citizens, and the fact that jobs and workers flow to where they are valued most, open immigration is a far more effective and humane policy. Today, we have neither. Patchwork walls and uneven enforcement here in Arizona merely force migrants to travel across dangerous terrain, like the Sonoran desert or the Mule mountains. Poor policy takes a terrible human toll - at least 230 migrants this year. It creates an informal market for professional smugglers, often associated with organized crime. Worst, it hasn't kept economic principles from working. With huge demand for cheap labor, and scores of workers seeking to improve their lives, immigration is going strong. Open borders are reasonable and humane. The poor deserve a chance to improve their lot.
