Is Vegetariasm a Purely Western Idea?

I have travel fairly extensively and it has only beenin the West, and particularly the Urban West, where Vegetarianism and vegans seem to flourish. Even Bhuddist Thailand does not have many vegetarians. Maybe this be because those outside of major Western cities have a closer relationship to nature and all the bruality that it is heir to?
