Why is music so important to the human mind?

Music saturates our lives on a daily basis. It has an affect on us to make us joyful, to boost our spirits, to fuel our creativity, and many other things. It's been observed to have an equal affect on other animals; primates, dolphins, and even plants.
Why is music wired to be so important to us, and even for animals?
