You're right to be suspicious of ethanol as it's produced now. However, cellulosic ethanol is the key to getting off of oil. We will soon be able to cheaply and efficiently produce ethanol from common prairie grasses such as switchgrass, as well as wood chips and common agricultural waste. The government, however, should not be picking the winners in this. It should simply set fuel standards and let the industry figure out how to meet those standards.
