When most people think of gangs, a positive reference does not come to mind. Crime, violence, drugs, prostitution are just some of things we associate with gangs. But what if we looked closer, at the roots of where these gangs come from, how and why they start and why they are so popular with youth in economically deprived areas. What if the way to work with these problems was to first understand, to listen, and to love? In Guayaquil, a poor city in southern Ecuador an amazing transformation is taking place. Through the efforts of one woman, a peace worker named Nelsa Libertad Cora Cubelo, rival gangs have formed truces, turned in their weapons and have started working together to rebuild the community. There is much we can learn from what is happening here that is applicable in many of our cities in the US and around the world.
