Is the United States a Christian or a Secular Nation?

If the US is a Christian nation, how does that treat non-Christian religions or the non-religious?
I'm agnostic, and tend to cringe somewhat when I hear someone say that the United States is a "Christian" nation or that our government is founded on Christian principles.
