Donal Lang

Architectural designer in Provence and engineering designer in Britain. In France I re-model villas, apartments and traditional houses, working on the Cote d'Azur, Provence and Haute Provence regions. I enjoy designing off-grid or low-carbon homes, especially for wild spaces or islands. I am working on floating-home developments for floodable regions in the U.K. and Europe. I am also an inventor and engineering designer, and I've designed many innovative products in marine, civil engineering, vehicles, mining and composites.

Last week my internet connection stopped for a day and stopped me working. It made me realise how important the internet has become in a very short time. We now depend on the internet for everything, even for phones and banking. Yet the system IS potentially vulnerable. Not just overload and breakdown, but also Chinese state hackers have reportedly been 'testing' foreign defence networks, the CIA buys code from hackers, and the EMP bomb (Electro Magnetic Pulse, which destroys all electrical networks) is a developed and simple technology. What would happen to your business if the internet system stopped for a month? Could you and your business could survive financially? Are we all too dependant on vulnerable technology?
